Chlorine Sensors & Transmitters

Chlorine measurement systems quantify disinfectant residuals to confirm microbial control while avoiding over‑chlorination and byproduct formation. Technologies often include amperometric sensors for free chlorine, total chlorine, and chlorine dioxide, with compensation for pH, temperature, and flow where needed. A dedicated transmitter conditions the signal, applies compensation and diagnostics, and provides outputs to control systems for dosing and alarming.

The main benefit is fast, continuous feedback for disinfection control. Real‑time residual measurement supports stable dose control under changing demand, such as shifts in organic load, ammonia content, or hydraulic residence time. Maintaining a reliable residual improves safety and compliance while reducing chemical consumption, minimizing taste/odor issues, and lowering the risk of exceeding byproduct targets tied to excessive dosing.

Typical applications include municipal drinking water disinfection (post‑filtration and distribution entry), booster chlorination control, and wastewater disinfection prior to discharge or reuse. Industrial applications include cooling water microbiological control, food and beverage sanitation water, and process water systems where biofouling threatens heat transfer or product integrity. Monitoring is also common in membrane pretreatment and CIP systems to verify sanitizer concentration.

Successful deployment depends on managing interferences and ensuring stable sample conditions. Many chlorine sensors require controlled flow and avoidance of air bubbles; flow assemblies and sample conditioning can improve stability. pH affects free chlorine speciation, so combined measurement or compensation may be necessary depending on the control objective. Regular verification against laboratory methods and proper membrane/electrolyte management sustain accuracy.

Transmitters add operational value through diagnostics, trend visualization, and flexible integration. Configurable alarms, relay logic, and digital communications enable tight control of dosing pumps and interlocks. Sensor health indicators and maintenance timers reduce unplanned downtime. When paired with robust mounting hardware and thoughtful sample handling, chlorine systems provide dependable residual control across highly variable water quality.
